Even though we’ve had mild weather up until now, winter is surely on it’s way which means shivering kids with red, runny noses and frozen fingers on our doorstep, snowball fights, sledding trips, and quiet evenings at home.
What better way to cozy up than with a cup of hot cocoa?!
I’m sure you’ll enjoy this rich, creamy recipe. The added spices give it a little kick.
Spiced Hot Chocolate:
- 3 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 ounces (2 squares) bittersweet chocolate, chopped
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. each of salt, cloves, allspice and chili powder
- marshmallows (optional)
- candy cane for stirring, this will give it a mint flavor (optional)
In a saucepan, mix the first three ingredients and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and add chocolate, cocoa powder, vanilla, salt and spices. Whisk until chocolate is melted and let it simmer for a few minutes so the flavours blend well. Pour into 4-5 cups and top with marshmallows.
note: you can determine for yourself the amount of spices you prefer. When serving this to a group of kids, you might want to limit the amount spices somewhat.
